Nidhi Nagori: Journey to Become a Chartered Accountant:
Nidhi Nagori journey from having “zero self-confidence” as a child to gaining love, respect, confidence, personality, and most importantly, PEACE for being an ugly duckling in the twenty-first century all due to the fact that she dared to struggle and get a CA.
Right after high school, in 2009, she began her quest towards chartered accounting. Since she comes from a medical and engineering family, nobody in her family truly understood what CA was all about.
Not being able to get a “prestigious” articleship seemed to be the most heartbreaking thing that could possibly happen in life. We all know that the Big 4 demand articles that have cleared on their first try; therefore, she had no idea why she had been refused.
She was labelled “dark and ugly” by society as she was growing up; therefore, she took those opinions personally and saw herself as dark and ugly, losing her self-confidence. In fact, she was distraught when she received a rejection letter from the Big 4 (while applying for an articleship).
Becoming a CA, despite all odds:
As she indicated before, she worked hard while working and studying for my CA final.
She studied hard and did her best to pass the CA final exams on her first try. However, she experienced a complete low point in her life when she lost her father 16 days before the release of her CA final results.
Her entire world shifted in an instant, and it wasn’t at all simple for her. She was barely 22 years old when all of this happened, and losing a parent is like losing half of your universe.
But as the saying goes, the only direction you can go after hitting rock bottom is up. After losing him, she began to consider structuring her life around priorities and adopting
But as the saying goes, once you hit rock bottom, there is only upward movement. After losing him, she began to consider how to organise her priorities in life and how to find the good in any circumstance. No one can win every day; what matters is the guts to keep going, not the success or the failure. She then got back up and continued.
She did her best, and on her first try, she passed the CA final examinations.
The Challenges Nidhi Nagori Overcame While in the US:
- She had trouble understanding accents everywhere she visited. Even placing a restaurant order was difficult for her!
- She cried during her first job interview in the US. Once more, it was a failure, but this time it was worse than losing my father. She thought she was going crazy!
- After this encounter, she researched interviews in the USA and discovered they are less formal and focus more on informal talks to get to know the candidate.
- Since she was a CA, she somehow managed to get a job with a Big 5 firm and spent the full 1.5 years working in public accounting.
- During this time, she learned how to dress professionally, how to tolerate people from other cultures, how to speak with accents, how to eat at business dinners, and how to make sure that the only thing that stands out about her is her hard work and not where she came from or how she appears.
- She focused on her personality and look by observing how other women dress, learning how to drive and walk in heels (if necessary), watching videos to grasp formal makeup, determining what hairdo suited her best, and assimilating herself into American culture through sports, comedy, and food.
- She was fortunate to get a work permit in the USA, but her lack of background made her an outsider in this country. To join the labour here, one had to undergo a complete makeover of the mind and body.
- Some would disagree, arguing that she is not required to assimilate into American society. However, this is true when you visit America (or any other foreign nation). She was not suggesting that she should compromise on her moral principles; rather, she was merely stating that it is important to blend in and be aware of the local culture. To do that, one would need to learn how to speak and act in a certain way while maintaining their morals.
How She increased her self-assurance:
- Looking at all of her photos right now may make you think, “Wow, she is really all confident and living her life to the fullest,” regarding her personal life. But she did work on it, I assure you!
- Yes, she experienced a lack of friends and a shattered sense of self-worth as a child, which led me to believe that she was a failure at life.
- In fact, she actually started boosting her self-confidence a little bit every day during her article ship phase!
- It has not been an easy journey, but that was never the plan. Good communication abilities were something her parents constantly emphasised. She supposes she was fortunate to speak English well and be an avid reader.
- Every day she reads the news from across the world, and she reads two novels (fiction and non-fiction) each month. In fact, she began campus recruiting for her employer and conducted numerous interviews personally!
- Because of CA, she was able to work for a Fortune 500 company, travel to a new nation every month, and embrace herself for who she is.
- Nidhi also wonders “how much” has changed in the last few decades as she writes her account now from Cleveland, Ohio.
